New Orleans Hurricane Katrina evacuees and family members Valerie Green, facing camera on left, Denise Nelson, Semaj Nelson, 1, Eddie Nelson and David Sparks hug in one of the families' new apartments in the Sharpstown apartment complex in southwest Houston, Texas on September 10, 2005, 13 days after the storm devastated the Gulf Coast. Sixteen members of the family moved out of the Reliant Center today, where they were living after being relocated from the Superdome following their voluntary evacuation before the storm hit. A Houstonian and her family and friends helped place the family in three FEMA-subsidized apartments which they fully equipped with furniture, clothes and food. The C&M Moving & Storage Company of Houston donated the moving van and labor. A documentary project, part of which was published by The New York Times, about Eddie and Denise Nelson and their family, a New Orleans African-American family who were displaced by Hurricane Katrina and became part of the diaspora living in Texas.
