Philando Castile teachers march

Chicago Teachers Union Recording Secretary Michael Brunson spoke to the hundreds of teachers and activists gathered outside the US Bank headquarters at South 8th Street and Nicollet Mall during the march "From Our Schools to the Streets: Justice for Philando Castile," led by the Saint Paul Federation of Teachers, Minneapolis Federation of Teachers and Minnesota Neighborhoods Organizing for Change (NOC) from the Minneapolis Convention Center (where teachers from across the country were gathered for a conference of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), the second-largest US teachers union) in downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota on July 19, 2016.

"Follow the money," said the hand-written script he was reading from. "The path leads right here to US Bank. Stop killing us. Stop robbing us. Black lives matter."

The group marched to the US Bank headquarters where a group of 21 people (identified by protest organizers as teachers, parents and clergy) were arrested as they sat and blocked the intersection.

Organizers said they were protesting the bank's investment in and profiting from the use of force in policing and the private prison industry. The group then returned to the convention center and dispersed.

Philando Castile, a cafeteria worker in the St. Paul public school system who was shot and killed by police during a traffic stop, was a 14-year member of Minnesota Teamsters Local 320 which represents public and law enforcement employees.
