Michael McConnell, 72, at left in the photo (he turns 73 on May 18, 2015) and Richard John (commonly known as "Jack") Baker, 73, display this photograph of them applying for a marriage license at the Hennepin County Courthouse on May 18, 1970 at their home in the Lyndale neighborhood of Minneapolis, Minnesota on May 4, 2015.
The couple, who have been a couple for 48 years, sought to have their 1971 marriage legally recognized, appealing their case Baker v. Nelson all the way to the United States Supreme Court. where the court dismissed the appeal "for want of a substantial federal question."
