New Orleans Hurricane Katrina evacuee Eddie Nelson relaxes on his first night in his family's new apartment in the Sharpstown apartment complex in southwest Houston, Texas on September 10, 2005, 13 days after the storm devastated the Gulf Coast. Sixteen members of Nelson's family moved out of the Reliant Center, where they were living after being relocated from the Superdome following their voluntary evacuation before the storm. A Houstonian and her family and friends helped place the family in three FEMA-subsidized apartments which they equipped with furniture, clothes and food. A documentary project, part of which was published by The New York Times, about Eddie and Denise Nelson and their family, a New Orleans African-American family who were displaced by Hurricane Katrina and became part of the diaspora living in Texas.
