Retired 3M electrical engineer Bob Nepper, 82, has a garage in his North St. Paul, Minnesota home filled with devices and tools he has designed and built over the years. Much of his work has been focused on water pasteurization, but he has made many things, including the electric fence for farmers, at right. He quit his job and made the device full-time for about a year before returning to his job at 3M.

His wife, Mary Nepper, 79, left, is still president of NSD, Inc. which was founded to make transformer parts for the electrical fence and is still in business making the parts for other clients.
