Date: 4/24/2008..Desk: MET..Slug: ..Assign Id: ..Well-worn copies of The Lord of the Flies sit on a shelf in English teacher Richie Diaz? classroom at the Cathedral Preparatory Seminary in Elmhurst, Queens on April 24, 2008. ?I know it?s a true blessing to be able to give the Catholic angle of it and not necessarily as the right or wrong angle. As here is an angle,? he says of teaching literature in a Catholic environment. .... ?Ironically, usually it?s my students who bring up the Catholic angle immediately regardless of what book we?re doing before I even get to it,? says Diaz (a Cathedral alum). ?One of the book I do with my sophomores early in the year is The Lord of the Flies. It?s funny, there?s a character in the Lord of the Flies who is like the good guy but they don?t say ?Why is he so good?? They say, ?Mr. Diaz, is he supposed to represent Jesus?? and I?ve never said the word. And every year it happens. ....It?s nice that we have a common ground that everyone can relate on and it?s also nice that they see it as a viable reality it?s not just a guy that people read about at mass in the morning. It?s a true blessing to be able to talk about that.? ......Photo by Angela Jimenez for The New York Times ..photographer contact 917-586-0916 A story, published in The New York Times, about the last existing diocesan day high school, located in Queens, New York, in the United States for young men who are considering the vocation of the Catholic priesthood.
