The inaugural graduation ceremony of the Yeshivat Maharat, the first institution to ordain Orthodox women as leaders trained in spiritual leadership and halakhic law in the Orthodox Jewish movement, is held at the Morris and Ida Newman Education Center in New York City on June 16, 2013.

Students Ruth Balinsky Friedman, in red head scarf, is applauded by Rabba Sara Hurwitz, left, as she passed under a banner held by two other Maharat students.

The three women are given the title "Maharat", a Hebrew acronym for "Manhiga Hilkhatit Rukhanit Toranit" which translates to a teacher of Jewish law and spirituality. The school, which currently has 14 students, was founded by Rabbi Avi Weiss. Rabbi Wiess controversially ordained the first female Orthodox Rabba in history, Rabba Sara Hurwitz, who serves as the dean of the school.
