Pictured is the certificate of marriage issued to Michael McConnell, 72 (he turns 73 on May 18, 2015) and Richard John (commonly known as "Jack") Baker, 73, by their minister on the day of their wedding ceremony, September 3, 1971, as photographed in a copy photo taken at the couple's home in Minneapolis, Minnesota on May 4, 2015. Mr. Baker was using the legal name of "Pat" at the time.

The couple, who have been a couple for 48 years, sought to have their 1971 marriage legally recognized, appealing their case Baker v. Nelson all the way to the United States Supreme Court. where the court dismissed the appeal "for want of a substantial federal question."
