Michael McConnell, 72 (he turns 73 on May 18, 2015) stands next to some of his files at the Jean-Nickolaus Tretter Collection in Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Studies at the University of Minnesota Libraries, where he and Richard John (commonly known as "Jack") Baker, 73, have a 35-box archive collection of their legal and personal records, called the "Michael McConnell Files", in Minneapolis, Minnesota on May 5, 2015.
The couple, who have been a couple for 48 years, sought to have their 1971 marriage legally recognized, appealing their case Baker v. Nelson all the way to the United States Supreme Court. where the court dismissed the appeal "for want of a substantial federal question."
McConnell accompanied a Times reporter and photographer to the library to locate original documents for reporting purposes.
