Michael McConnell, 72, right, (he turns 73 on May 18, 2015) and Richard John (commonly known as "Jack") Baker, 73, are photographed at their home in the Lyndale neighborhood of Minneapolis, Minnesota on May 5, 2015 with a photo that a photographer friend, Kay Tobin Lahusen, took of them shortly after their wedding ceremony in 1971.

The couple, who have been a couple for 48 years, sought to have their 1971 marriage legally recognized, appealing their case Baker v. Nelson all the way to the United States Supreme Court. where the court dismissed the appeal "for want of a substantial federal question."

*PHOTOGRAPHER NOTE: I am not sure of the usage status of this image. There is a collection of Lahusen's work at this library, but please confirm usage rights? Lahusen is still alive, apparently at a nursing home in Pennsylvania, but subjects are not in direct contact.
